JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Program Manager, assists Social Worker to develop individual day treatment plans for youths referred to the Center. Implements treatment plans for assigned youth to modify inappropriate behaviors and unacceptable attitudes.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties:

  • Develops individual treatment plans for Center participants in cooperation with Social Worker.
  • Supervises and participates in all youth activities, monitoring youth¿s schedule, behavior and problem handling. Assesses the effectiveness of treatment plans and makes recommendations for change when appropriate.
  • Provides early crisis intervention to youths to modify inappropriate or potentially hazardous behavior. Counsels youths concerning acceptable patterns of working and living behavior.
  • Participates with other staff to review services delivered to provide and receive feedback on program participants.
  • Maintains liaison with staff from Juvenile Court, Social Services, and area schools to give and receive information and discuss Center participants.
  • Assists with planning and implementing Center programs such as survival skills and employment skills training and activities such as arts and crafts, field trips and outings.
  • Prepares daily and monthly reports, detailing youth progress, as well as special reports for court hearings.
  • Performs various other tasks such as preparing meals and transporting youths to various locations.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:

  • Behavioral/cognitive theory techniques.
  • Behavioral modification techniques.
Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipment, including VCR and photocopy machine.
  • Directing, controlling and planning the activities of others.
  • Influencing youth enrolled in program in their opinions, attitudes and judgments.
  • Expressing personal feelings.
  • Performing effectively under stress; attaining precise set limits, tolerances and standards.
  • Physical management of youth.
  • Writing skills (including generating daily and monthly progress and activity reports).
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

A valid Michigan Vehicle Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required. Michigan Department of Certification Counselors preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Duties require sufficient mobility to interact with teenagers in recreational activities and field trips/outings. Duties may require an employee to exert up to ten (10) pounds of force occasionally, or up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Restraining youth/physical management may be required.

EDUCATION

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Social Work, a behavioral science or a related field.
EXPERIENCE

A minimum of one (1) year of professional counseling. Three- to six-month break-in period. Experience working with adolescents preferred.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
BONA FIDE OCCUPATIONAL QUALIFICATION

Privacy rights of the population or residents in certain facilities can justify bona fide occupational qualification to provide for same-sex personal hygiene care. Therefore, due to the population of clients at the Center, no more than two-thirds (2/3) of the Youth Counselor Day Treatment positions will be filled by the same gender. This Bona Fide Occupational Qualification is required to employ equal gender representation in the Youth Counselor Day Treatment positions.
