JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, performs on-site maintenance on drains and lake level control structures at various locations throughout Washtenaw County to ensure proper operation and safety. Performs physical drain maintenance and repair work, including removal of brush, sediment, and debris, pipe installation and repair, and storm water structure repair. Operates and maintains chain saw, brush chipper, weed whip, other small mechanized equipment and various hand tools. Inspects and installs soil erosion and sedimentation control measures. May be assigned to operate a boom mower or front end loader tractor under supervision. Assists Drain Inspectors with inspections and response to citizen work requests. Reports on the daily progress of assigned tasks; desirable to have good interpersonal skills.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties:

  • Performs maintenance on county drains and lake level control structures to assure proper operation, consistent with the provisions of the Michigan Drain Code and Lake Level Act.
  • Operates and maintains chain saws, brush chippers, weed whips, various small mechanized equipment and hand tools.
  • Operates technology equipment such as computers and digital cameras.
  • Adheres to Drain Commissioner's standards and the Michigan Drain Code.
  • Assists others in performing periodic routine drain inspections to assure that departmental standards are met, that drains are operating properly, or to identify and implement necessary maintenance work.
  • Provides general information to property owners in the field regarding office policies and procedures while referring them to the proper personnel.
  • May be requested to assist with emergency situations after normal business hours.
  • Maintains records of activities for department administrative use.
  • Inspects and installs soil erosion and sedimentation control measures
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Duties require sufficient mobility and capability to perform labor-intensive activities in a field setting. Duties may require employee to exert 90 pounds of force occasionally or a lesser amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Also must be able to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment, with vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and with hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's License is required. A history of driving record will be included in the background check.
The following violations will not be accepted:

  • Loss of driving privilege through suspension or revocation of license due to an unsatisfactory driving record as defined by the Michigan Department of State driver's license point system within the last five years. If there are no violations within the last three years from the date of the record check, eligibility will be reviewed by Risk Management on a case-by-case basis.
  • Conviction of OUIL or impaired vehicle operation within 5 years of record check date.
  • Two or more convictions of reckless/careless driving within two years of application date.
  • A total of 7 or more points on driving record within 2 years.
EDUCATION
  • Possession of a High School diploma or its equivalent. Other desirable skills include basic computer, and plan and map reading.
EXPERIENCE
  • Experience involving tree cutting, grounds maintenance, or utility construction & maintenance preferred.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Steel toed boots required.
  • Prospective applicants must pass a background check which includes driving record history prior to start of employment.
