JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, is responsible for working directly with individuals who have recently been arrested and processed in to the Washtenaw County Jail. Conducts interviews, investigations, verifies information provided by defendants, and completes risk assessments to submit to the court for review at the time of arraignment. Engages and participates in various agency unit and team meetings. May be responsible for related duties and projects within the Corrections Division of the Sheriff's Office. Duties are performed within the jail and other correctional settings. Handles confidential and sensitive information. Performs related work as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Conducts comprehensive reviews of the records of criminal defendants lodged in the jail, including but not limited to, review of court dockets, criminal case histories, and the processing of Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) information.
  • Interviewing of felony and misdemeanor defendants soon after arrest.
  • Investigates and verifies the status and veracity of a variety of criminal defendant information including but not limited to residence, employment, mental health status and other information required by the Court.
  • Performs screening and assessment of incarcerated individuals using a comprehensive tool to support appropriate program placement and utilization decisions.
  • Updates and maintains databases. Enters data into computer and manual record systems. Interprets data trends and provides analysis when requested.
  • Performs responsible staff work which may require the exercise of independent judgment, the handling of confidential and sensitive information, and the application of knowledge related to corrections, court and criminal justice activities.
  • Researches and assembles information, some of which is confidential and sensitive, from a variety of sources for the completion of forms or the preparation of reports; may make arithmetic, or statistical calculations.
  • Organizes and maintains files and records. Prepares administrative records and other documents. Ensures all records and other documents are accurate and available to senior personnel.
  • Provides information and support to other agencies, the public, or particular County staff in person, in writing, or over the telephone.
  • Maintains records of activity and enters and retrieves data. Prepare reports and communications using on-line or computer systems; may operate and maintain data bases or other automated files and systems.
  • Creates correspondence, reports, forms, and specialized documents from drafts, notes; may compose standard correspondence independently. Compiles and prepares correspondence and reports of sometimes sensitive or confidential information.
  • Uses standard office equipment and computers as well as specialized technologies in the course of the work. May coordinate the work of temporary part-time personnel.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information and related data and information processed.
  • Organizes and prioritizes own work.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Enters data into a computer terminal with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform the work assigned to that position.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of criminal justice systems and operations, including the appropriate application of policies, regulations, and procedures.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess a valid driver¿s license and be able to work at any designated work site.
  • Must meet qualifications to be a Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) operator.
  • Ability to type a specified number of words per minute and data-entry keystrokes as required by the Sheriff's Office.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone. Duties may require employee to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pound of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to bend, reach and lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
Must be willing to work varied hours and extended shifts including holidays and be on-call.

EDUCATION
Possession of an Associate's degree or equivalent study or coursework in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology or related fields is preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Previous experience with basic work place technology and operating in a correctional setting or field is preferred.
