JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, is responsible for the development and implementation of nutrition education components for individuals and groups for programs of the Public Health Department, including but not limited to the WIC and Maternal Infant Health Program. Participates in the assessment and counseling of clients and their families regarding their nutrition intake. Develops individual written nutrition care plans for clients. Conducts ongoing in-service workshops to update staff, serving as resource person in dietetics to the Department. Certifies participants for the WIC Program and provides nutrition counseling for clients in home or clinic settings.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Develops general nutrition programs to meet the needs of a population that is nutritionally at risk.
  • Sees individuals identified as high-risk participants for the development of an individual written nutrition care plan.
  • Provides in-service workshops in the area of nutrition and dietetics to department staff members.
  • Meets on a regular basis with the program coordinators to discuss program operation and to assure a constant open line of communication in the area of nutrition.
  • Provides nutritional education services to clients.
  • Serves as nutrition resource person for all staff members compiling information such as films, pamphlets, booklets, articles, etc., for use in programs. In addition, assists the public with problems or questions regarding nutrition.
  • Develops forms for nutrition purposes; gathers and analyzes various statistics, and assists in the preparation of agency reports as requested and required.
  • Maintains contact with other agencies and area health programs in order to coordinate efforts, eliminate duplication of efforts and enrich the nutrition component of County programs.
  • Keeps informed of developments in the field by reading publications and attending meetings, conferences and workshops to discuss related subjects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer monitor and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.

EDUCATION
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in nutrition or dietetics
  • Master's degree preferred
EXPERIENCE
Level I - Grade 20

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience as a dietitian, nutritionist, or the equivalent in the field of community health, pediatric, and/or maternal/infant nutrition services
  • Employees may advance to LEVEL II after at least two (2) year of Registered Dietician I experience with acceptable work performance
Level II - Grade 22

  • Two (2) years of experience as a dietitian, nutritionist, or the equivalent and/or two (2) years of LEVEL I knowledge and experience required with acceptable work performance.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) under Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics standards.
