JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, conducts field inspections of construction sites at various locations throughout Washtenaw County to prevent soil erosion. Reviews plans, issues permits, and responds to citizen complaints. Investigates possible soil erosion incidents and gathers information for the enforcement of the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control At 347, Public Acts of 1972, as amended.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties

  • Investigates citizen complaints regarding soil erosion and sedimentation control that come under the jurisdiction of the department.
  • Seeks voluntary compliance where standards are not met, advising for corrections. May be required to assist in preparing cases for legal action when voluntary compliance does not result in correction.
  • Performs site inspections to assure compliance with departmental standards and the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Act.
  • Inspects sites under construction for adherence to plans, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Assists the general public to resolve complaints and answer questions regarding soil erosion and sedimentation control. Provides information on the prevention and resolution of soil-erosion-related matters.
  • Reviews plans for earth changes, issues soil erosion control permits, reviews performance bonds for soil erosion.
  • Prepares materials for microfilming.
  • Keeps department library up-to-date.
  • Maintains records of activities, researches and analyzes information, and prepares regular reports for departmental administrative use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Soil erosion and sedimentation control pertinent to construction sites.
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations.
  • Principles and practices of soil erosion and sedimentation control; best management practices.
  • Computer applications related to work.
  • Correct oral and written English usage.
  • Standard office practices, including the operation of standard office equipment and maintaining accurate records & files.

  • Setting priorities, coordinating multiple projects and meeting critical deadlines.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATION
Possession of a valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer monitor and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.

EDUCATION
Possession of a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in environmental health, geology, biology, or a related environmental field.
EXPERIENCE
Twelve (12) to eighteen (18) months experience in environmental health, construction or a closely related area.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of a Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Training Program, sponsored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, within six (6) months of the date of hire.
