JOB SUMMARY
|
|
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, performs a variety of maintenance, grounds, repair and construction tasks on the existing County Parks System and in the development of new parks and facilities. In addition, operates and maintains various pieces of equipment to perform activities. Special duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|

Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks to construct, repair and maintain park grounds and facilities.
|
-
Maintains daily records on equipment, chemicals, and supplies used on work assignments and daily time sheets.
|
-
Mows and trims grass, trees and shrubs using hand and power tools, hand and riding mowers; seeds and fertilizes grass areas; weeds garden areas.
|
-
Rakes and hauls leaves using rakes and leaf blowers, moves dirt, mulch, and rocks as instructed. Operates heavy equipment, i.e. front end loader, dump truck.

Plants new trees, as well as prunes and trims new and existing trees to promote healthy growth, utilizing chain saws and various small grooming tools. In addition, cuts and cleans dead trees and brush as specified.

Utilizes various carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry and mechanical skills in new building construction activities, and in the restoration and maintenance of newly constructed and existing park and recreation facilities and equipment.

Cleans shelters, restrooms, and other park and golf facilities, replenishes supplies, makes minor repairs and mops as necessary. Notifies supervisor of more significant issues to be addressed.

Transports necessary materials and personnel, loads and unloads vehicles with a variety of equipment, tools and materials to be used for maintenance repair and construction activities.

Performs both minor repairs on maintenance equipment and routine maintenance such as greasing, oiling and sharpening blades on a periodic basis.
|

May perform the duties of other maintenance personnel as necessary due to excessive workloads, temporary absences or emergencies, and as needed.
|

Seasonal weekend and holiday work required.
|

Performs snow removal activities.
|

Performs other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
|
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
|

Adaptability, fluidity in situations to move between tasks and requirements.
|

Previous experience in maintenance, repair or construction, preferably with parks and recreation or similar operation.
|
-
Experience leading seasonal employees working in the field.
|
-
Ability to safely use and maintain (and train seasonal staff to safely use and maintain) chain saws, brush blades, herbicide applicators, and other field equipment.
|
-
Knowledge of relevant safety regulations and procedure for equipment.
|
-
Good communication skills and ability to foster teamwork.
|
-
Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
|
|
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
|
|
Possession of a valid Michigan Chauffer License is required.
|
|
Ability to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate for the State of Michigan within 6 months from date of employment.
|
|
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
|
-
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal park and recreation setting and use standard equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers and saws; and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone. The incumbent will work primarily outdoors and be seasonally exposed to extreme (both hot and cold) weather conditions. The work requires the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. The incumbent must be physically capable of completing the tasks outlined about with sufficient physical agility to lift eighty (80) pounds.

EDUCATION
|
|
Possession of a high school diploma.
|
|
EXPERIENCE
|
Level I - Grade 17:
|
-
A minimum of one (1) year experience involving maintenance, repair and construction activities or equivalent. Demonstrated proficiency in the use, service and repair of various grounds care equipment such as mowers, weed whips, tractors and service vehicles. Six (6) month probation/break-in period.
|
Level II - Grade 19:
|
-
Promotion to a Grade 19 will be based on proficiency of skills gained, job performance, and supervisor approval. Minimum two (2) years of experience working for the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission maintenance/repair or equivalent experience. All of the following licenses/certifications must be obtained before moving to a Grade 19:

Possession of Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate.
|

Possession of certificate of completion from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group S190/S130 coursework including the necessary fieldwork, or equivalent, as approved by the Department Head.
|

Documented equivalent prior experience, or completion of 6 hours of webinars, training, or seminars on natural area management tools, such as prescribed fire, native or invasive species identification, ecology, or natural trail construction as approved by Supervisor.
|

Maintained Possession of Commercial Pesticide Applicator License from State of Michigan.
|
-
Documented equivalent prior experience, or completion of (2-3) of classes in the following fields, as approved by Supervisor: Welding, Carpentry, Plumbing / Pipe Fitting, Electrical, Small Engine Repair, Pumps / Motors, HVAC
|

Demonstrated proficiency in the use, service, and repair of maintenance equipment such as chainsaws, off-road vehicles, sprayers, tractors, and service vehicles.
|

Proficiency in communication and computer skills.
|
Level III - Grade 21
|
-
Promotion to a Grade 21 will be based on proficiency of skills gained, job performance, and supervisor approval. Minimum four (4) years of experience with Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission maintenance/repair or equivalent experience or a minimum of four (4) years of experience involving commercial pool and/or building mechanical operation. All of the following licenses/certifications must be obtained before moving to a Grade 21:
