JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent, this position plans, organizes, directs and reviews the operations and maintenance of the golf course, parklands, and maintenance facilities and equipment. In addition directs and supervises maintenance employees, as well as other temporary and seasonal employees. Responsible for the oversight of entire facility operations in the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties:

  • Develops and implements goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the organizational until to which assigned.
  • Aids in the creation of the annual plan for the property and the designated landscaping areas. Includes rotational design to provide facility with fresh, eye-catching, interesting and pleasant atmosphere.
  • Provides input and support to future development and renovation projects of the course and associated facilities, through working relationships with various resources.
  • Development and implementation of day-to-day operating policies and procedures and the interpretation and execution of broader policies under the authority of the Superintendent.
  • Development and administration of the budget associated with maintenance equipment, greens care and overall operations of the golf course.
  • Responsible for the direction and coordination of purchasing activities ensuring that an adequate inventory of operational and maintenance supplies are maintained.
  • Manages the golf course and the groundskeepers in accordance with the golf course maintenance and health and safety practices.
  • Develops a plan/program for fertilizer and chemical applications and exercises authority over the groundskeepers in the preparation and proper application.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines employees in daily maintenance of golf course and equipment.
  • Plans and instructs personnel in landscaping of the golf course, clubhouse grounds, and park area, including tree trimming or removal, construction of tees, sand bunkers, drains, screening, and planting of trees.
  • Schedules personnel and is responsible for mowing of greens, tees, and fairways.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of sand traps, top dressing, aerifying, verticutting, and changing cups.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate records of personnel, equipment used, supplies, and schedules indicating application of fertilizers, sprays & chemicals, and their use for the each season. Prepares special reports as deemed necessary
  • Oversees, directs, and plans repairs of broken lines or valves for water system and may perform necessary repairs in times of emergency.
  • Assists in the planning and development of new irrigation systems including redesigns and modifications of existing irrigation system.
  • Ensures all workers are trained in the proper operation, care, and maintenance of equipment. Supervises maintenance and repair on equipment.
  • Responsible for the clubhouse operation in the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Initiates and reviews payroll documentation for both full and part-time employees.
Keep abreast of modern advances in materials, methods and machinery in green keeping.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Practiced in landscape horticulture and landscape management including proper use of insecticides and fungicides.
  • Background with greens and fairways maintenance.
  • Knowledge of using various soils, chemicals, and fertilizers regarding the propagation and care of grass.
  • Principles and methods of golf course management.
  • Experience with small engine repair, equipment maintenance, operating, and grinding reels, etc.
  • Ability to objectively review program content and facility maintenance, evaluate findings and effect improvements.
  • Planning, organizing, directing, reviewing, and evaluating the work of staff.
  • Interpreting, applying, and explaining laws, policies, and regulations to staff and the public.
  • Setting priorities and coordinating multiple projects and activities.
  • Using sound, independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contracted in the course of the work.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate for the State of Michigan within six (6) months. Must be certified in the categories of Commercial Core, (3A) Turfgrass and (6) Right of Way.
Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) Class A member is desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing this duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand; talk or hear, walk, and operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, and crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

EDUCATION
Possession of an Associate's degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, plant science, or horticulture plus two (2) years of turf management which must have been in a supervisory or lead worker capacity, or any equivalent combination of education and experience is mandatory. Bachelor's degree is preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years' experience as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent or Golf Course Greens Manager is preferred.
