JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, assists with rain garden maintenance, public education, and outreach efforts. Program work supports continued efforts to reduce stormwater runoff and protect the waterways within Washtenaw County.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties:

Maintenance of Public Rain Gardens (50%)
  • Assist in managing the maintenance of public rain garden sites. Regularly monitor sites, coordinate with volunteer stewards and maintain public rain gardens. Work will include identifying plants, monitoring gardens, training new stewards, communicating with stewards, removing invasive species, mulching, planting, seeding and other maintenance related tasks.
  • Report and log data to record work completed, outstanding projects and costs related to maintenance.
Private Rain Garden Assistance Visits (50%)
  • Make in-person and remote (Zoom/Teams) Rain Garden Assistance Visits to homeowner properties, to assess the site potential for building a rain garden.
  • Interview the homeowner to find out what their goals are, and how a rain garden could fit into their plans. Make recommendations about the feasibility of potential rain garden locations and building methods.
  • Make planting recommendations for the rain garden.
  • Support homeowners' rain garden building process by giving advice through e-mail and Facebook group. Update GIS map of rain gardens.
  • Speak in front of local civic groups about rain gardens.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Skill in:

Interest is required in the areas of environmental management, environmental education, gardening or related fields. Proven ability to communicate and deal effectively with people both individually and in groups.
This class description intends to identify the major duties and requirements of the job and should not be interpreted as all-inclusive. Incumbents may be requested to perform job-related duties other than those outlined above and may be required to obtain specific job-related knowledge for successful job performance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in normal office and field settings, including ability to make field site inspections, and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone. Be able to lift 20 lbs and be able to do gardening work for at least 3 hours at a time. Must be able and licensed to drive and comfortable driving a pickup truck.

EDUCATION
A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required.
Certified as a Master Rain Gardener is strongly preferred but not required. www.MasterRainGardener.org
Certified as a Master Gardener is preferred but not required.
EXPERIENCE
At least one year of related work is required.
Experience building (digging and planting) a rain garden is required.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to attend work at various locations within Washtenaw County on time. Some evening and weekend work will be required.
The starting pay is between $19 and $22.50/hour and the work week is up to 37.5 hours. The position will begin mid-March and last through mid-December.
