JOB SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator, promotes breastfeeding as the optimal method of infant feeding among WIC moms through individual or group counseling at WIC site and by phone.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Essential Duties

  • Promotes breastfeeding and encourages WIC moms to breastfeed through individual or group counseling.
  • Receives a caseload of WIC clients and makes periodic contact with all assigned clients throughout their prenatal and breastfeeding experience.
  • Provides guidance and information on initiation of breastfeeding, prevention of and relief from common problems, maintaining milk supply and weaning.
  • Assists with maintenance of Breast Pump Program and breastfeeding appliances at site: Teaches use, cleaning and assembly of breast pumps and expression and storage of breast milk.
  • Identifies breastfeeding situations which require assistance and makes immediate, appropriate referrals.
  • Keeps accurate documentation of contacts with clients in MI-WIC
  • Attends staff meetings and breastfeeding conference/workshops as required.
  • Teaches and/or participates in prenatal and breastfeeding classes and leads breastfeeding support groups.
  • Complies with state and local breastfeeding policies and procedures.
  • Actively promotes breastfeeding by preparing bulletin boards, posters and by maintaining a sufficient supply of breastfeeding materials to meet needs of clients and the community.
  • Participates in WBW activities and WCBC activities
Other Functions:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Must adhere to departmental standards in regard to HIPPA and other privacy issues.
  • During a public health emergency, the employee may be required to perform duties similar to but not limited to those in her job description.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Of:

  • WIC policies, procedures, rules and regulations related to the department to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of other Public Health programs and services.
  • Available community resources.
  • Proper form for business correspondence.
  • Business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals.
  • Good communication skills -- listening, presenting, oral/written communication.
  • Recordkeeping principles and practices.
  • Basic business data processing principles and systems, including the basic use of word processing and database applications on personal computer equipment.
Skill In:

  • Ability to understand language in addition to English is highly desirable
  • Applying and explaining policies and procedures.
  • Organizing and maintaining accurate files and records.
  • Making accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Using sound independent judgment within established policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Preparing routine correspondence from brief instructions.
  • Organizing and prioritizing own work.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted within the course of work.
  • Entering data into a computer terminal with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform the work of the department.
  • Performing effectively under stress; attaining precise set limits, tolerances and standards.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's license required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting, as well as make field visits to client homes, and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.

EDUCATION
  • Possession of a High School diploma or its equivalent is required.
EXPERIENCE
  • Has breastfed for six months or longer, enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help mothers, is able to clearly communicate in English, multilingual is preferred. Responsible and self motivated, is sensitive to a diverse population and has reliable transportation. Current or previous WIC client preferred.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Attends Loving Support or Breastfeeding Basics Training
  • Observes other peers or lactation consultant helping mothers breastfeed
  • Reads assigned books or materials about breastfeeding
  • Completes orientation to the WIC Program
  • Attends on-going breastfeeding training
  • Taught procedures for documenting client contacts and completing activity reports
