JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a District Court judge, conducts pre-sentence investigations and prepares reports on individuals to assist the judge in determining the most appropriate sentence. Supervises probationers to assure that they are following the conditions of their probation.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Investigates the background of persons awaiting sentencing on district court convictions, including gathering data from such sources as police and school records and interviews with police and school officials, relatives of the client, employers and the client.
  • Assesses information gathered in the investigation, writes a report on the findings and makes a recommendation to the judge as to the proper sentence.
  • Supervises district court probationers to assure that they comply with the terms of their probation.
  • Counsels and guides probationers by discussing their problems and progress.
  • Assists probationers to gain employment, enter school or training programs and enter rehabilitation programs. Continuously develops new referral agencies.
  • Visits probationers at home and their work site to discuss and help resolve problems.
  • If probation is violated, may prepare petition, violation report and present evidence at violation hearing.
  • Activities may require consultations after normal working hours.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer monitor and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.
  • Must be able to bend, reach and lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

EDUCATION
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in Criminal Justice or a Behavioral Science.
EXPERIENCE
  • One (1) year as a Probation Officer or equivalent experience. Three- to six-month break-in period.
