JOB SUMMARY
The Washtenaw County Health Department is seeking applications for a paid Preventative Medicine Student Trainee. This paid position will work with the WCHD medical director on topics related to preventive medicine and epidemiology.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties:

  • Literature review on relevant public health issues (including COVID-19, communicable disease, opioids)
  • Assisting with reports for partner organizations and the community
  • Epidemiological analysis in topics such as communicable disease, opioids, chronic disease, and social determinants of health
  • COVID related mitigation activities (i.e. case investigation, protocol development)
  • Opportunities to assist in community outreach

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Previous experience with communicable disease epidemiology/investigation
  • Experience in writing scientific/medical manuscripts and reports
  • Coursework in statistical analysis and epidemiologic analysis.
  • Experience using R, python or equivalent for data analysis. Preferred: using R Shiny to create interactive analyses and visualization
  • Comfortable working both in office and remotely (hybrid position)
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's license or State issued identification card.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a video display terminal (computer) screen and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.
EDUCATION
High school graduate or equivalent. Active enrollment in a Bachelors or Masters Degree program or equivalent to the completion of two years of college with an emphasis on or a related field is strongly preferred.
EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of biostatistical, epidemiologic, or public health didactic or practical experience

Position is intended to work no more than 600 hours (in total).
