JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of a higher classified employee, the Volunteer & Educational Program Supervisor will perform a wide range of tasks including the development, coordination and implementation of the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission (WCPARC) volunteer and educational programs in the field of natural resource management, parks sponsored events, and other community outreach programs. Working either individually, or in conjunction with other WCPARC staff, the candidate will train, supervise, and set work priorities for programming staff; assist with volunteer workdays; recruit new volunteers; and track volunteer & program activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties:

  • Supervises the park naturalists and part-time staff involved in the departmental educational programming and volunteer initiatives.
  • Oversees the development of the monthly, quarterly, and annual calendar for educational programming, community volunteer initiatives, and county-wide workday opportunities.
  • Analyses, tracks, and monitors reports on all volunteer activities & educational programs; compiles an annual summary of county park events, programs, volunteer hours and accomplishments.
  • Coordinates volunteer projects at park facilities with facility staff as needed.
  • Organizes and leads WCPARC volunteer program which includes but is not limited to workday events, park programs, special events, citizen science programs, geocaching, photo ambassador, master gardeners, and volunteer appreciation efforts.
  • Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • Manages individual and group requests (e.g., scouts, civic organizations, teachers, and other members of the public) interested in educational programs or volunteering with WCPARC.
  • Foster and demonstrate effective relationship building in a collaborative environment including working across department lines and forming partnerships that foster better citizen services; eliminate barriers to achieving results; take full advantage of available resources; and provide input in the development of service area and department short- and long-range plans.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate workshops to recruit and train volunteers in the fundamentals of invasive species management, photo-monitoring and fundamentals of compliance and sustainability processes.
  • Occasionally assists staff with stewardship work at parks or preserves.
  • In coordination with Communications Manager, promote public awareness of parks educational programming, volunteer opportunities, and ecological stewardship initiatives.
  • Represents WCPARC at community and public events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with ecosystems, plants, and invasive species of the Great Lakes Region.
  • Experience working with volunteer programs and volunteers is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with principles and practices of environmental education and / or community engagement.
  • Ability to lead, direct, coordinate, and motivate employees and volunteers to conduct ecology stewardship activities and other public programs.
  • Ability to use and manipulate databases for tacking large amounts of data.
  • Highly motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented, and possess the willingness and ability to work with park staff and volunteers in all weather conditions.
  • Critically evaluate and analyze operations and data and provide meaningful reports to assist with the development of improved program and service delivery; translate data and research analysis to assist with the development and design of service and program improvements.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Ability to follow through with projects to completion.
  • Experience in training, supervising, setting work priorities and evaluating staff.
  • Develop standard operating procedures regarding volunteer and public programs.
  • Keep supervisor apprised of progress and potential issues as needed.
  • Possesses excellent communication skills and the ability to motivate people.
  • Highly organized with a working knowledge of basic clerical procedures and the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment such as loppers, trim saws, and herbicide applicators.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Will be required to work assigned special events, weekends, evenings.
  • Will be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs.
  • Ability to perform essential duties.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of a valid driver's license is required.
Ability to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate for the State of Michigan within 3-6 months of date of employment. Maintain certification throughout employment with WCPARC.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials, and a computer monitor and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone. This position also requires work outside, so the incumbent will be exposed to extreme (both hot and cold) weather conditions, including snow and ice. The incumbent will be expected to walk on rough, off-trail, uneven terrain, as well as wet and slippery surfaces. The work requires the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Incumbent must be physically capable of completing tasks outlined above with physical agility to occasionally lift fifty (50) pounds in a backpack. This work requires the ability to correctly apply personal protective equipment (PPE).

EDUCATION
Possession of a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in outdoor recreation, environmental education, or environmental sciences with courses in flora and fauna identification or related field.
EXPERIENCE
Three (3) to five (5) years of experience required in outdoor recreation, educational programming, leading volunteer events, volunteer program develop and recruitment, or other applicable experience. Two (2) to three (3) years supervisory experience is required.
