JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Chief Judge and the presiding Judges of the Court, performs judicial / magistrate functions as defined by statute and court order; provides legal support to the Judges and Court Administrator; performs related work as assigned, including but not limited to the preparation of various reports and documents.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties:

  • Conducts felony and misdemeanor arraignments, sets bonds and appoints court appointed attorneys.
  • Conducts hearings and renders decisions in small claims matters.
  • Issues search warrants and makes probable cause determinations, signs criminal complaints and warrants.
  • Conducts hearings and renders decisions in small claims matters. Accepts guilty pleas and pronounces sentences in certain matters as allowed by statute.
  • Conducts civil infraction hearings and other proceedings as authorized by the Chief Judge and permitted under statute and court rule.
  • Assists judges by preparing files, written opinions, memoranda, correspondence, and other written documents; performs legal research.
  • May supervise immediate staff including but not limited to scheduling and monitoring, reviewing, and evaluating of work performance.
  • Serves as liaison to attorneys and other cases participants regarding court activity, procedures, and related matters.
  • Provides customer service by assisting court clients or stakeholders in-person or via telephone by ascertaining needs, explaining policies and procedures, and/or referring them to other court locations, staff members, government, or professional offices.
  • Participates in periodic planning and management meetings with the Court Administrator or Chief Judge, including but not limited to the formulation and improvement of the systems and processes of the court.
  • May provide oversight to special projects, assignments, process improvement and operational areas as assigned or necessary, including the provision of reports.
  • Capable of dealing with clients, customers and litigants who may be hostile, irate, intoxicated, unstable, or violence prone. May need to ascertain a proper course of action to avoid confrontation and physical danger.

LICESES/CERTIFICATIONS
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan
  • Must possess either a valid operator's license or be able to work at any 14A court site.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer monitor and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone. Must be able to bend, reach and lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds or exert 25 pounds of force consistently. EDUCATION
Possession of a Juris Doctor degree.
EXPERIENCE
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a practicing professional attorney.
  • Experience as a Magistrate or other closely related court experience preferred but not required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a registered elector in Washtenaw County [MCLA 600.8507].
  • Must reside (or be able to relocate before employment begins) within the 14A Judicial District.
  • Must complete the Michigan Judicial Institute (MJI) / State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) New Magistrate Training Program as soon as available.
  • Willing to be on-call and work a flexible schedule including but not limited to weekends and holidays.
