Job Summary:
|
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, prepares and serves meals to residents in an institutional setting. Establishes quantities from menus, dietary instructions, or standard procedures. Washes dishes and cooking utensils along with cleaning food service and preparation areas. In addition, performs a variety of janitorial tasks, including cleaning offices, hallways, restrooms, and meeting areas.

Typical Duties:
|
An employee in this classification may perform several of the following duties:
|

Establishes and reviews menu plans to determine types and quantities of foodstuffs necessary for meals. Acquires a current count of individuals eating to determine the amount of food to prepare.

Plans cooking schedule so meals are ready at a specified time.
|

Performs preliminary food preparation activities such as paring vegetables, mixing ingredients, and placing food items into proper pans for cooking.
|

Prepares and cooks main course meats, vegetables, and other items.
|

Portions food on plates for distribution, and serves food.
|
-
May prepare special meals in accordance with medical or religious recommendations for persons with unique dietary needs.
|

Stock both foodstuffs and paper products for breakfast and snack.
|
-
Utilizes a variety of kitchen utensils and equipment such as blenders, ovens, mixers, grinders, and slicers in the preparation of meals.
|

Maintains sanitary and orderly cooking conditions by cleaning and washing meal preparation areas, cooking utensils, dishes, appliances, along with food storage areas.
|

Receives deliveries of foodstuffs, paper products, and janitorial supplies.
|

Maintains an inventory of foodstuffs, paper products, and janitorial supplies, ordering when a supply runs low.
|

Packages food in proper portions to be stored in the freezer and refrigerator.
|

Maintains security by keeping all necessary doors locked, secures windows and building entrances after cleaning or on a regular schedule.
|

Dust mops and wet mops floors and stairways and operates a vacuum to clean carpet areas. Spot cleans carpeted areas where necessary.
|

Periodically strips floors of old wax, applies fresh wax, and operates a power buffer to polish floors.
|

Dusts, waxes or polishes furniture, empties wastepaper baskets, cleans mirrors, glass windows and doors. Places trash in dumpster.

Places recycling in appropriate bins/dumpsters. This includes the breaking down of all cardboard boxes.

Reports potential hazards or items in need of repair to appropriate staff.
|
-
May perform various duties of the Building Maintenance Worker as workloads, temporary absences or emergencies dictate.
|

Performs other related duties as assigned.
|

Physical Demands
|
Duties require sufficient mobility and capability to lift 21-50 pounds and may require employee to exert a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Also must be able to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment, with vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and with hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.

Employment Qualifications:
|
Education:Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent.
|
Experience:A minimum of one year of experience in food preparation and service or equivalent.
