JOB SUMMARY
|
|
Under the direction of the CoC Supervisor and Human Services Division Administrator, the HMIS Coordinator works closely with the HMIS Policy Specialist, as the subject matter expert, and the Continuum of Care (CoC) team as key collaborators. This role supports data quality efforts, analyzes homelessness data, and translates findings into actionable recommendations. The HMIS Coordinator also assists with the implementation of homelessness-related policies and procedures, helping ensure consistency, compliance, and shared accountability across the system.

The Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is a critical tool used to collect, analyze, and report client-level data for individuals and families served through homeless prevention, shelter, supportive services, and housing programs. Our work relies on accurate data, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to ending homelessness. The HMIS Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring the success of the HMIS system and the people who use it. Serving as the primary point of contact for HMIS Agency Administrators, this position provides day-to-day technical support, troubleshooting assistance, and guidance across multiple databases. The HMIS Coordinator also monitors support requests to identify trends, inform system improvements, and support the development of targeted training opportunities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|
Essential Duties:
|

Play a central role in ending homelessness locally by managing the Continuum of Care (CoC) By-Name List ensuring people experiencing homelessness are prioritized thoughtfully and equitably through coordinated entry and community decision-making.
|

Collaborate with nonprofit partners and community leaders by actively participating in and supporting bi-weekly Community Housing Prioritization (CHP) meetings, including facilitation and follow-up that moves people closer to housing.
|

Empower nonprofit agencies to do their best work by supporting HMIS users through technical assistance, onboarding, and training in partnership with the HMIS System Administrator.
|

Serve as a connector between local agencies and statewide systems, attending Michigan State HMIS (MSHMIS) meetings and translating updates into clear, actionable guidance for participating organizations.
|

Strengthen collaboration across the homeless response system by co-facilitating Agency Administrator meetings, capturing insights, and helping turn discussion into action.
|

Transform data into meaningful stories and decisions by assisting with HUD, MSHDA, and local reporting that demonstrates impact, accountability, and progress including reporting tied to pandemic response and recovery efforts.
|

Champion data quality and system integrity, helping agencies meet HMIS standards through quarterly data quality reviews and supportive feedback.
|

Be part of hands-on community efforts, including participating in the annual Point-In-Time (PIT) Count to ensure unsheltered individuals are seen, counted, and represented.
|

Protect dignity and confidentiality by upholding HMIS privacy standards and contributing to the ongoing maintenance of operating policies and procedures.
|

Use analytical thinking to drive change, gathering and analyzing data, sharing findings with leadership, and assisting with implementation of improvements.
|

Maintain and manage critical data systems, including database upkeep, spreadsheets, reports, and other-related documentation that support funding and compliance.
|

Engage as a community leader and learner, participating in CoC committees and professional development opportunities to stay informed, connected, and inspired.
|

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Principles and practices of public administration.

Applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Knowledge and understanding of computers and software applications

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
|

Specified positions may require possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
|

Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer monitor and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.
|

Ability to also work remotely as necessary.
|
|

EDUCATION
|

Equivalent to possession of a Bachelor's degree with major coursework in social work, public administration, non-profit administration, or field related to the work.
|

EXPERIENCE
|

Minimum of two years' experience working with Community Services/HMIS or similar data systems; or two years of community-based services experience within human services, homelessness response, or related systems and one year managing a secure database.
|
|
